Excessive meat consumption and its relation to hypertension and other diseases

Image
I am really shocked by the fact that many people think that the more meat they eat, the healthier they get and the better their health becomes! Let's crush this fact in this article. Let’s dive into some details about what can increased consumption of meat do to your body. I will begin with very very basic concepts related to basic physiology in our bodies and later I will show you what does the recent research and trends say. 1- I ncreased consumption of protein (steak) is associated with hypertension due to the effect of protein on our kidney and its ability to reabsorb sodium The topic may seem confusing but I will make it so simple as possible. We all aware that steak is a great source of protein, and all of us need a constant amount of protein to avoid collapsing our metabolic pathways. For now, I will talk about how excessive consumption of just protein is related to hypertension (not mentioning cholesterol and animal fat and their direct negative effect on our health) Meat i...

How hypertension can cause hypertrophy to the heart and damage it?

Image
I am glad that you asked this question. In this article, I will be talking about changes that occur to the heart as a result of different diseases and including hypertension. There are 2 kinds of hypertrophy that can happen to our heart:  concentric and eccentric.  They depend on what diseases you have. The first type is the  concentric hypertrophy.  In this type, the myocardium becomes so thickened that it can’t relax and is filled hardly. Consequently, as the atrium contracts, this produces a heart sound called S4 that can be auscultated using the stethoscope. Here is how it looks. As you see, the ventricle is just so so thick. It makes it very hard to fill this ventricle and, as a result, the cardiac output decreases. With time, this can precipitate diastolic heart failure. What are the causes of concentric hypertrophy? They are many. The idea here is that anything that increases the afterload on the heart, it increases the work the heart needs to push blood. With...

Why the pustule on your nose may kill you?

Image
Have you heard about the dangerous triangle of the face? Of course, all of you have experienced something like this or at least have seen someone experiencing some doing this thing. Did you know that squeezing spots in the dangerous triangle of your face would kill you? How? Let me explain. I will take the answer to 2 levels. The first 1 is for general knowledge for people and the other is for those who enjoy nerdy stuff. These pustules you squeeze are usually full of bacteria. This is why they are swollen and sometimes painful. Additionally, the liquid you get out after squeezing them is just a mix of bacteria and dead immune and skin cells. Some times when you press the wrong way on these pustules, you may introduce the bacteria to your deep tissue. What would happen? The dangerous triangle is drained by a vein called the facial vein. This facial vein is unfortunately connected to a collection of veins called the cavernous sinus. These veins drain your brain. When the cavernous sinu...
