The suffering that people with cancer live with!
As a student doctor, I have seen many patients who had cancers growing in their bodies and don’t feel it and don’t have any symptoms until it is too late (until the tumor has metastasized to other organs)
I have seen a patient who has lymphoma (a type of blood cancer) He didn’t feel anything; he literally had no symptoms, but one day he started to have some symptoms related to his respiratory system like cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis. When he did a chest x-ray, he was found to have massive pleural effusion (water on the lung) due to the tumor metastasized to his lung. He had an x-ray similar to that. Look at the left lung!
Not only that but he also, when he was asked to do a CT scan on his abdomen, he was found to have the tumor metastasized to his liver. (Can you see these blackish areas? These are multiple tumor masses growing at his liver)
I knew that this patient had a very bad prognosis and he most likely will pass away in a few months. It is very sad to know that. The tumor started with literally one cell, but look how bad it is. It grows and doesn’t give any sign until it is too late. This is why they are called malignant tumors; they are literally malignant! No signs no symptoms, with huge bad progression.
What is the best medicine for lymphoma. Specifically non-hodgkins? Is chemotheraphy can help?
ReplyDeleteSure chemotherapy helps. Chemo with radiatio. But it depend on the prognosis. Some lymphomas are with good prognosis while others are with bad prognosis.

Can non hodgkin's lymphoma come back even after 10 years of remission.? As my friend was diagnosed with this cancer in 2010 and after 4 to 5 drugs of chemotherapy he has been well by 2011. After that he has done with 3 pet scans where no cancer cells have found in his body. So is it possible that the same cancer can come back or some other type of cancer can come..?
ReplyDeleteIt is not impossible. But it could happen. Patients are exposed to radiation and chemotherapy and these things may increase the chance of developing another tumor in the future. But this is not always the case. Many people live their life peacfully without any complications.

DeleteMy normally very healthy hubby went to ER for God poisoning and they did an xray finding a mass in his right upper lung. Surgery and removed the upper rt. lung. Then told him he should be fine! Not to worry.
A year later in January 2024 he went in for a scan. They discovered several metastasized carcinoid masses on his spine.
They said no to chemo and radiation (because the masses are to close to his nerves. So I don't understand what his prognosis is.
He's lost 41 pounds in 40 days. He's becoming forgetful and tired.Hes in denial. I've heard his situation is dire.
Based on what I've shared. Do you have any thoughts on what to expect. They will do another petscan 05/15th.

you definitely need to get 2 or 3 opinions quickly. Because tumors can grow fast and his weight lost dropping so quickly is urgent concern. Time is an essence. Yale New Haven Hospital has really medical team of doctors. Prayers and Blessings to your love one.
